My hair has really taken some abuse this summer. I have naturally curly hair, which means that it’s already dry. I have two colors of dyed and bleached highlights, then I use a flat iron a few times a week. As if that’s not enough, I swim a few times a week.
All of this means that my hair is dry, dull, and in desperate need of some extra love! I use a face mask once a week, so why not use a hair mask once a week as well?
HAIR MASK RECIPE FOR SHINY HAIR
This hair mask takes about half an hour to make, but you can store it on the shelf for months. I’ve tried a lot of hair masks that need to be made just before you use it, but I really prefer ones that I only have to make once every few months for convenience.
This recipe only has a few ingredients, and I carefully selected each one for its properties for the hair. The base is made of coconut oil because it is semi-solid at room temperature. It is mostly made of smaller medium-chain fatty acids that penetrate the hair shaft deeper than other oils.
Shea butter also hardens the recipe, giving it some bulk. The vitamins and fats nourish your hair for softer, smoother hair. It works like an oil does on your hair, but it doesn’t leave your hair oily. Since the other ingredients are oils, this helps cut the oily feel so your hair doesn’t get too greasy.
The star of this recipe is the parsley infused flax oil. I chose parsley because it has vitamins and minerals that help soften your hair and make it shiny. It is also high in copper to protect your hair color.
I chose flax oil because it’s high in omega-3s that nourish your hair and help close the follicle for shiny hair. It’s also high in vitamin E for your hair and scalp.
To infuse the oil, I filled an 8-ounce mason jar with organic parsley and covered it with flax oil. Then I set it in my pantry and let it infuse for two weeks, shaking it every day. (Infusing the oil with an herb gives the properties of the herb to the oil without making a messy recipe with small bits of herb floating in it.)
- 4 tablespoons coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons shea butter
- 2 teaspoons parsley infused flax oil
- 3-5 drops chamomile essential oil
Melt the coconut oil and shea butter in a double boiler, stirring occasionally. Once melted, remove from heat.
Add the parsley infused flax oil.
Put in a 4-ounce mason jar and store up to 3 months.
To use this hair mask for shiny hair, scoop out 1-2 tablespoons and spread all over your dry hair and scalp. Use a wide-toothed comb to distribute it throughout your hair.
Let sit for 30 minutes and rinse. Shampoo well.
