Why I Love Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint is another powerful oil in a simple package. It’s extremely versatile — one of those oils you should always have on hand.

Here are my personal favorite uses for peppermint:

1. Focus!

Rub a drop of peppermint across the forehead, temples and the back of the neck anytime you need to improve concentration or focus. I do this whenever I’m feeling sluggish or foggy-brained.

2. Muscle Rub

Peppermint is my go-to for muscles that need a break! It’s actually considered a “driver” — layer it on top of other oils for muscles (like PanAway or wintergreen) to “drive” them in and increase their effectiveness. Dilute 50/50 with aloe or carrier oil and massage into muscles for relief.

3. Digestive System Support

Need a little support for your digestive system? Peppermint to the rescue! Rub a few drops into the stomach and abdomen to soothe the digestive system (dilute if needed).

4. Cooking

Yep, that’s right — cooking! A few drops of peppermint in your brownie recipe and YUM — everyone will be pleased. I also make a yummy stomach-soothing peppermint tea like this: add a drop of peppermint oil into some honey, add warm water and enjoy!

5. Fresh Breath

For fresh breath and a clean-feeling mouth, put one drop of peppermint oil on the tongue. (Hint: this is handy for keeping in your purse instead of breath mints — plus no artificial sweeteners or additives!)

  1. love your site! but every time I tried to enter my pinterest name, the pin it thing came up preventing me from doing so (it kept sending me to pin the 20 purposes for peppermint essential oils). Oh, well, I did get the other entries into your contest! maybe I’ll win!

  2. The one I would hesitate to endorse here is heartburn. Peppermint has been shown to relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES opens and closes the junction between the esophagus and stomach. The decreased tone of the LES will allow more food to reflux up into the esophagus. While the peppermint may help the symptoms, it could potentially mask and encourage serious damage to the esophagus. Now for those who get occasional heartburn go for it. If it is happening very often and you have a lot of risk factors for Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) consider medical management. Otherwise, I love peppermint oil. I will have to starting using it for studies and exams (I have NMBE Step 1 in a week!)

    • Good tip for anyone who has chronic heartburn–there could definitely be other factors at play. Let me know how it works for your exams! I know it sure helps me concentrate during work.

  4. I tried Peppermint for my allergies/stuffy nose and oh boy did it open things up! Burned a little bit, but I also used a q-tip and put it up in there. If I try it again, I’ll either dilute a bit or just put it at my nostril opening ins like you suggest.

  5. A lot of great info here. I am very big in to the essential oils. I keep them near me so that I can smell them as a way to relax, they make me smile and be happy.

  6. Even with Young Living Oils, it is best to err on the side of caution when taking oils internally. They shouldn’t ever be put in liquids and drank because they can harm the mucous membranes. Adding them to thick substances and in cooking is ok in moderation with prior study (read up – join a “using essential oils safely” facebook group, etc). I used to drink the lemon oil all the time until I learned this. I have also had neat lemon oil burn my skin pretty badly when left on – and I’m really pale, so I was concerned when the burn was a brown bruise color and peeled a few days later like a sunburn. Oils should be considered “medicinal” and treated with utmost care.

    • Thanks for your comment! I absolutely recommend the safe use of essential oils. Some oils should always be diluted at least 50:50, especially for sensitive skin. Lemon is definitely one of them! For internal use, I recommend the slow approach and going with your gut instinct, and only using the best quality oils available. There are many ways to help essential oils “suspend” into liquids (such as stirring them with salt or sugar or honey first), which will prevent them from being consumed all at once. I think common sense is the best tool of the trade!
